Criticality allows consideration of both the probability of failure mode occurrence and its possible impact on user costs, productivity, worker health and safety as well as the working environment. It should be adjusted against the primary influencer factors (operations, environment and maintenance).
A criticality rating is calculated for systems, equipment, components and the critical maintenance tasks. As far as a maintenance task is concerned, this rating allows this task to be recognized as important, especially in regards to its contribution towards achieving performance objectives.
«Criticality allows the prioritizing of improvement efforts»
With this criticality rating, the different maintenance tasks are prioritized with the goal of assuring the optimum reliability and availability of the assets. It is a measure allowing identification of the assets, or maintenance tasks, which most affect the company’s principal performance indicators (rate of use, productivity and operating costs). Criticality should take into account both the possible, or measured occurrency frequency and the possible, or measured impact on the chosen performance indicator. This rating should also take into account the type of break, the operational context of the asset, and the environmental as well as the maintenance conditions. This criticality rating should be kept as low as possible.
